MY PERSONAL CONNECTION:
My great-grandfather was born in Daugavpils, Latvia, and my great-grandmother was born in Vilnius, Lithuania.
They married and lived in Vilnius before emigrating to the United States in 1905 from the Latvian port of Liepāja, likely to escape the growing antisemitic violence.
I did not discover this family history until well into adulthood—AFTER earning my undergraduate degree in Russian and my graduate degree in linguistics with a focus on second language acquisition.
Discovering this connection deepened a sense of belonging I felt to the region and brought new personal meaning to my work. It strengthened my commitment to helping people develop their personal and professional voices in English, especially those with Baltic and Slavic backgrounds.
I hold an M.A. in Linguistics with an emphasis in Second Language Acquisition, a TESOL teaching endorsement, and a B.A. in Russian.
My training and experience allow me to recognize and address cross-Slavic pronunciation, rhythm, and prosodic patterns that affect clarity in American English.
I’m a native English speaker living in the United States.
I have experienced firsthand both the challenges and rewards of learning another language.
